And whoever said romantasy isn’t reading, clearly hasn’t picked up a romantasy book. Between the political intrigue, complex characters, and swoon worthy romances, how can you hate on it?!

The Spark that Ignites is the start of the Shattered Soul Series and while it doesn’t play into the majority of the romantasy tropes and plot lines, I consider the series as a whole to be romantasy.

And it is hard to put your novel into a box when it leans a variety of ways. But one things is for sure: it will yank out your heart.

✨PERSONAL STORY TIME✨

I believe, regardless of your intentions, as an author a little piece of your heart always finds its way into your stories. For the Shattered Soul Series, one of the central themes is fate. That unmistakable feeling your soul is tied to another’s. So, in a way, I have put my whole heart into these books.

Now for the story …

The first time I met my now husband, I asked him if we had met before. Because I felt something deep in my core that somewhere along the way, in this plain of existence, we had. If you are lucky enough to experience this in your lifetime, ensure you hold onto it. We have been together for almost twelve years now and married for five. He truly is my best friend and other half.

He taught me that I should not have to beg for love. That I was worthy and special and he loved all the broken pieces of me just as he loved the whole ones. And that he would always put me back together when I fell apart.

And when he read The Ember that Tethers he shed a few tears. Now, I should preface this with explaining that my husband is very much a golden retriever, quick to laugh, and not an overly emotion man.

But when he got to the end of book two with tears in his eyes and I asked him why he was crying, he said “Because that’s how I feel about you.”

Excuse me while I go sob into a pillow 😭😭 because I wrote a story of unconditional love. A love that finds you no matter the cost or circumstance. A love that sees you through anything. That sacrifices. That endures. That finds you in every lifetime.

And though the characters and story are 100% fictional, the love and emotion put into this story are not. And that’s what makes stories amazing. The sharing of the human experience and the ability to feel it through words. For it to leap off the page and sink into your heart. 💕

In honour of my 100th post, let’s have a chat, shall we?

I feel some vulnerability is needed, first to help us connect, and second to discuss problems we are likely all facing but are too afraid to voice it.

1) BURN OUT. Yes, we’re starting with a raw one. As an indie author we’re doing it all. Editing, cover design, marketing, connecting with readers, and then there’s actually writing which goes waaayyy on the back burner. Not to mention most of us have full time jobs already. So please be kind to indie authors. We don’t have the team behind us like trad authors do. It’s usually a one man show and boy, it’s a CIRCUS over here.

2) AI AND BEING CANCELLED. There. I said it. I’m terrified of making a mistake and accidentally using AI in a way that will have followers dropping me. I love artists and want to commission artwork like a mad woman but it’s EXPENSIVE and ya girl is poor as hell. So please be mindful of this, especially indie authors trying to market. We’re all doing our best.

3) THE CALM AFTER THE STORM. Up to your launch, it’s INSANE. I don’t think I’ve ever been so sleep deprived but also on such a high as I was when The Spark that Ignites released. But it’s the quiet after that is hardest. And as difficult as it is to admit, sadness and loneliness often follow.

4) THE PRESSURE. To write quickly, produce more books, do more marketing, be present online and also in real life. All of it. Most of all, to be perfect. And if you’re anything like me, the pressure is crippling at times. But know you’re not alone!

5) NOT EVERYONE WILL LIKE YOUR BOOK BUT PLEASE BE KIND IN REVIEWS. It’s a hard pill to swallow as someone who is unendingly passionate about their story and characters, but I know some people will pick up my book and not like it or DNF. And that’s okay! HOWEVER, as an indie author, nasty reviews are incredibly detrimental. As small creators, we rely heavily on reviews and word of mouth to get our story out there. So please be kind!
